OTTAWA, ON — June 10, 2026 /CNW/ – The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is backing the introduction of the Safe Social Media Act, highlighting growing concerns over the negative impact of foreign tech companies on Canadian children.
“It’s time for a change. These platforms should not continue making profits at the expense of our kids’ mental health and safety,” said a CMA representative.
This new legislation aims to position Canada as a leader in online safety, ensuring that young people are better protected from potential harm in the digital world.
“The need for this law is urgent,” the CMA emphasized. They assert that the government, along with regulatory bodies and tech companies, must take responsibility for addressing harmful features on social media and AI chatbots. It is essential that accurate information is promoted, and those spreading misleading or harmful content are held accountable.
The CMA calls for robust public oversight and an independent national regulator with access to platform data to effectively safeguard young Canadians.
“We’re eager to engage in discussions around this legislation, sharing insights from doctors and patients alike. We urge the federal government to act swiftly and ensure the protection of our youth from the profit-driven motives of big tech companies,” said Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, President of the CMA.
