China’s DeepSeek Slashes V4-Pro AI Model Prices by 75%: Nvidia’s Influence at Play

DeepSeek Cuts Prices on AI Model: A Game Changer

The Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has announced a stunning 75% price cut on its flagship product, the V4-Pro model. This dramatic reduction means that the cost to access DeepSeek’s powerful AI software will now be just a fraction of its previous price.

Although DeepSeek has not confirmed the exact reasons for this drop, many believe that the increased availability of Huawei chips has played a significant role. When the V4 model was launched last month, DeepSeek noted that the Pro version would initially cost up to 12 times more than its less powerful Flash version. This high cost was attributed to “constraints in high-end compute capacity,” which limited availability.

However, DeepSeek indicated that prices would likely decrease significantly once Huawei’s Ascend 950 supernodes became widely available later this year.

Major Shift in Token Pricing

In addition to the price cut for the V4-Pro model, DeepSeek has also lowered its Application Programming Interface (API) costs. The cost is now set between 0.025 and 6 yuan per million tokens (approximately $0.0035 to $0.83), depending on the type of deployment. Previously, developers faced costs ranging from 0.1 to 24 yuan.

In the AI sector, a “token” represents a small unit of text processed by a language model. By cutting token costs to mere fractions of a cent, DeepSeek aims to offer affordable options for software developers, challenging both local competitors and Western AI companies.

Influence of Nvidia’s Export Restrictions

The factors behind DeepSeek’s significant price cut may also be linked to ongoing trade tensions regarding advanced semiconductor technology. Current U.S. export regulations prevent Nvidia from selling its high-end AI graphics processing units (GPUs) to Chinese companies. Intended to hinder China’s AI development, these restrictions have inadvertently created a booming market for Huawei, Nvidia’s main domestic competitor.

DeepSeek’s reliance on Huawei’s Ascend 950 chips allows the company to enhance the performance of its V4 models while keeping operational costs low. By focusing on local technology instead of expensive foreign hardware, DeepSeek is positioned to offer competitive pricing in a rapidly evolving AI landscape.

This strategic move not only signals a shift in the AI industry but also raises the stakes for competition among tech companies, both in China and globally.
