WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will not attend his son’s wedding, citing important government responsibilities that require him to stay in Washington.
Trump had mentioned just a day earlier that the ongoing situation with Iran made it an unsuitable time for him to travel to the Bahamas for Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson.
In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump expressed his disappointment: “While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and his future wife, Bettina, the circumstances related to government and my dedication to the United States mean I cannot be there.” He added a note of congratulations for the couple: “Congratulations to Don and Bettina!”
The White House later confirmed that Trump will not travel as planned to his golf resort in New Jersey this weekend and will remain in Washington instead.
Although Trump didn’t provide specific reasons for the urgency, it comes at a crucial time in negotiations to address the tensions in the Middle East. Iran is considering a new proposal from the U.S., and a senior military official from Pakistan is on his way to Tehran to mediate the discussions.
Meanwhile, tensions are also rising with Cuba, as the U.S. intensifies its pressure by charging former president Raul Castro with various allegations. In response, the U.S. military has sent an aircraft carrier and support ships to the Caribbean to bolster its presence in the area.
