MS Dhoni’s Retirement & CSK’s IPL 2026 Departure: Ruturaj Gaikwad Promises Clarity Next Year

Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), left fans with more questions than answers as the IPL 2026 season came to a disappointing end. When asked about the possibility of MS Dhoni retiring after this season, Gaikwad admitted that he, too, was uncertain about what lies ahead for the legendary wicketkeeper-batter.

CSK’s journey ended abruptly with an 89-run defeat to the Gujarat Titans on May 21, which eliminated them from the playoff race and marked yet another disappointing season for the five-time champions.

In the post-match presentation, Gaikwad reflected on the team’s challenges, saying, “You and I both will know what happens next year.” He emphasized Dhoni’s significant impact on the game, stating, “He can change the game’s momentum just by being at the crease.”

Though Gaikwad expressed pride in the team’s younger players and the experience they gained this year, the looming question about Dhoni’s retirement felt particularly heavy this time around. While Dhoni had previously indicated he would continue playing after IPL 2025, the atmosphere this season felt different due to his prolonged absence from matches.

Injuries kept Dhoni sidelined for most of the season, leading to growing speculation about his future. This uncertainty made the season emotionally charged for Chennai fans. Dhoni has been a pillar for CSK through various eras, marked by trophy wins and tough times. However, his presence this season felt more like that of a mentor rather than an active player.

The franchise is now transitioning, with Gaikwad taking full control of leadership and younger talents like Dewald Brevis and Shaik Rasheed stepping up.

Unfortunately, CSK’s struggles seem to be far from temporary. Their loss to the Gujarat Titans solidified their elimination from IPL 2026, leaving them with only 12 points from 14 matches, marking the third consecutive season without a playoff appearance. Injuries played a significant role in this downfall, as the team’s middle order struggled, and their bowling lacked effectiveness during crucial moments.

As they prepare for IPL 2027, one big question remains: Will there be one final season of MS Dhoni in the iconic yellow jersey, or has the IPL quietly witnessed the close of one of its greatest chapters?
