Auto-Rickshaws in New Delhi Showcase Unusual Trump Ads

In the bustling streets of New Delhi, where traffic can often feel overwhelming, a surprising sight has caught the attention of many commuters: images of former U.S. President Donald Trump prominently displayed on the backs of auto-rickshaws. Underneath his portrait, the message reads, “Happy Birthday America!”

Recently, around 100 auto-rickshaws in the Indian capital have been adorned with large pictures of Trump alongside the Statue of Liberty. This promotional effort stands out in a city where rickshaws usually flaunt advertisements for local services like fertility clinics and English classes.

This unique advertising initiative was introduced last month by Sergio Gor, the U.S. ambassador to India. It aims to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, with various cultural activities and outreach efforts planned in several countries to mark the occasion.

In a social media post, the U.S. Embassy mentioned, “Freedom is on the move … literally!” and encouraged residents of Delhi to spot these decorated auto-rickshaws, stating, “Catch them if you can — they’ll be popping up all over Delhi soon.”

The move comes as Washington looks to strengthen its relationship with India, especially after some tensions arose due to Trump’s tariff policies that impacted Indian exports. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit New Delhi over the weekend.

However, for some auto-rickshaw drivers, the campaign doesn’t hold much significance. Driver Ganesh Kumar initially declined to participate when approached by organizers. “I told them I didn’t want it,” he recalled. Ultimately, he agreed after they offered him a packet of tea as an incentive.

Another driver, Pradeep Kumar, mentioned that he joined in mainly because his rickshaw’s canopy was torn and needed a covering. When asked about the advertisement’s message, he simply stated, “I know he is Trump. Don’t know much other than that.”
