Local Health Department Offers Tick Safety Tips for Families and Pets

The Berrien County Health Department is raising awareness about the importance of tick safety as warmer weather approaches. With more people and their pets spending time outdoors, the department is encouraging residents to take precautions against ticks, which can carry diseases.

Ticks are small, spider-like creatures that can attach themselves to people and animals. They thrive in wooded or grassy areas and can be challenging to spot. To help keep you and your pets safe, the health department recommends several key strategies.

First, when heading outside, wear light-colored clothing. This makes it easier to spot ticks. Long sleeves and long pants are also helpful, as they provide extra protection. If possible, stick to the center of trails when walking, avoiding tall grass and dense vegetation where ticks might be hiding.

After outdoor activities, it’s crucial to check yourself and your pets for ticks. Pay special attention to areas like behind the ears, under the arms, and near the waistband. If you find a tick, it’s best to remove it carefully with tweezers, pulling it straight out without twisting.

Additionally, keeping your yard tidy can help reduce tick habitats. Regularly mowing the lawn, clearing brush, and keeping firewood piles away from the yard can make a difference.

For those looking for extra protection, the health department advises using insect repellent that contains at least 20% DEET on exposed skin and clothing. There are also treatments available for pets to help keep ticks at bay.

By following these tips, families can enjoy the outdoors while reducing the risk of tick bites. The Berrien County Health Department encourages everyone to stay informed and take simple steps to stay safe this season.
