In the exciting chase for the IPL playoffs, where one loss can lead to serious worries, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad showed a surprising calmness after his team’s tough defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.
Fans who are used to the strategic approach of the Dhoni era found Gaikwad’s take on Chennai’s tricky path to the playoffs quite surprising. Instead of sounding cautious, the young captain insisted that the defending champions’ task ahead is “quite easy.”
“It’s simple for us,” Gaikwad said, brushing aside the pressure surrounding the team. “We just need to win every game we play. There’s nothing complicated here. It’s easy from this point.”
Despite Gaikwad’s relaxed attitude, the points table tells a different story. Chennai’s heavy loss, by seven wickets at the Ekana Stadium, has left their campaign hanging by a thread. With just 12 points from 12 matches, the five-time champions have lost control of their fate.
Can CSK Make the Playoffs?
Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh were instrumental in dismantling Chennai’s total of 187, severely impacting CSK’s Net Run Rate, which now sits at a precarious +0.027. To have a shot at the safety mark of 16 points, Chennai must win their last two matches: one at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 and then an away match against Gujarat Titans on May 21. Even after winning, they will need other teams to help them out.
Focusing on the immediate challenge, Gaikwad said, “Firstly, we need to get back to Chennai. It’s a long flight. After that, we’ll look at what we can improve on and adjust to the conditions quickly. We just need to have a good day and hope we can turn things around.”
Embracing the Pressure: Hussey’s Take
While Gaikwad’s optimism surprised many, assistant coach Michael Hussey added a more experienced perspective. He believes the pressure of the final week could fuel the team’s drive, as they have been known to perform well during intense moments.
“There are many teams vying for the last few spots. I enjoy this,” Hussey stated. “This is when the real pressure builds—not just on us, but on other teams, too. Crazy things can happen now. As long as we have a chance, we believe we can make it.”
Noting that they will need help from other teams to advance, Hussey remained hopeful about the tournament’s thrilling conclusion. “We need to focus on our games and hope for some results in our favor. That’s how the tournament works. Winning the next two matches will give us a good chance,” he added.
CSK will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their upcoming match on Monday at Chepauk, while keeping an eye on the results of teams like Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
