As the global political landscape shifts due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Western sanctions, and rising tensions among major powers, Russia is reaffirming its long-standing partnership with India.

In a recent discussion, the Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, emphasized that the India-Russia relationship is founded on deep-rooted trust developed over many years. He pointed out that, despite severe sanctions from the West, the bond between Russia and India has not only persisted but also grown across sectors like energy, trade, defense, manufacturing, and culture.

Alipov highlighted that India’s continued buying of discounted Russian oil plays a vital role in stabilizing the global energy market and serves India’s economic interests as well. He expressed confidence that India would always pursue an independent foreign policy, unaffected by external pressures.

Refuting claims that Western sanctions have significantly impacted Russia, Alipov stated that such measures have backfired, ultimately harming those who imposed them more than Russia itself. He noted that Russia has quickly adapted, redirecting trade to countries willing to cooperate, particularly India. Energy cooperation is crucial, he mentioned, but the relationship extends into manufacturing, research, agriculture, and strategic technologies.

The ambassador also spoke about growing cultural exchanges and educational ties, indicating that the relationship between India and Russia is multifaceted and robust. Regarding military collaboration, Alipov dismissed suggestions that the Ukraine conflict has hindered Russia’s ability to supply India. He stressed the importance of joint production and technology transfer and affirmed Russia’s support for India’s self-reliance initiatives long before the recent Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign.

Alipov highlighted the positive rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin as sincere and strategically significant. He noted that trust can take years to build but can be lost quickly, a remark that underscores why Russia sees India as different from other global partners.

On the topic of Ukraine, Alipov defended Russia’s security concerns and maintained that any future peace settlement must reflect current realities. While he expressed support for negotiations, he rejected superficial ceasefire agreements that do not address broader security demands and NATO’s expansion.

The ambassador acknowledged India’s consistent calls for dialogue and diplomacy. Although he refrained from suggesting India take on a formal mediation role, he implied that Russia values India as one of the few major nations capable of fostering communication between all parties involved.

As Russia prepares for future multilateral events like BRICS and other Global South gatherings, Alipov framed the emerging world order as increasingly multipolar and driven by consensus. In this changing environment, he believes that the India-Russia partnership is not just surviving geopolitical challenges, but is evolving into one of Russia’s most vital strategic alliances.
