Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker is gearing up to direct a new documentary series titled Temple Raiders. This captivating project will delve into the complex networks involved in the theft and trafficking of sacred temple artifacts from India. Produced by Tudip Entertainment and Riverland Entertainment, in collaboration with Ashutosh Gowariker Productions, the series promises to bring attention to a significant yet often overlooked issue.

Temple Raiders is designed as a docu-drama, blending factual storytelling with a cinematic approach. The series will spotlight real-life events while presenting them in a narrative format that aims to engage a broad audience. Raghav Khanna, known for his work on documentaries like The Elephant Whisperers and The Mumbai Mafia, is not only writing but also showrunning the project.

For Gowariker, this marks his first venture into the documentary realm after a successful career in historical filmmaking. He expressed his fascination with documentaries, saying, “I’ve been interested in the format for years and have wanted to create one. When the idea of Temple Raiders came to me, it struck a chord. It’s a topic that has been building in significance for a long time.”

The series will investigate the ongoing problem of idol theft in India and unravel the global networks behind these crimes. Gowariker plans to format it as a four-episode series, combining facts with engaging storytelling to offer viewers an enlightening experience.

Khanna described the narrative as one where “faith and greed collide,” aiming to add depth and scale to documentary storytelling. The team behind Temple Raiders intends to use various cinematic techniques to provide an immersive experience while staying true to real events.

Producers highlighted the cultural impact of the series, aiming to initiate conversations about heritage preservation and the importance of temple artifacts. With its unique blend of investigative storytelling and dramatization, Temple Raiders is part of a growing trend in high-concept documentaries aimed at a global audience.
