IPL 2026: RCB’s Phil Salt Heads to UK for Scans, Igniting Selection Dilemma

Phil Salt Heads Back to England for Finger Injury Scans, Leaving RCB in a Tough Spot

Phil Salt has returned to England for medical scans, creating new challenges for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2026. The opener has already missed three matches, and his absence is becoming increasingly apparent as the team looks to secure a strong position in the tournament.

As reported, Salt’s trip back to the UK is to evaluate a finger injury sustained during RCB’s game against the Delhi Capitals on April 18. This news adds to RCB’s difficulties since they are now lacking one of their top-performing players during a critical point in the season.

Salt had been a bright spot for RCB, scoring 202 runs in six innings with an impressive strike rate of 168.33. His dynamic starts have put pressure on opposing bowlers. With Salt out, RCB has had to adjust their lineup, bringing in Jacob Bethell to open alongside Virat Kohli. However, the results have not matched Salt’s high energy and effectiveness.

The timing of this injury couldn’t be worse for RCB, who are striving to build momentum. Losing a player who has been pivotal in setting the tone early in matches complicates their strategy, particularly as Bethell has yet to find his rhythm despite receiving extended chances to showcase his skills.

How Did Phil Salt Get Injured?

Salt’s injury occurred during a home match against the Delhi Capitals. He injured the finger on his left hand while trying to make a diving stop near the deep backward square leg during the second innings. While such fielding efforts are routine, in this instance, it resulted in an injury serious enough to bench him for multiple games.

While RCB has not officially disclosed the full extent of Salt’s injury, his trip back to England for scans indicates a cautious approach from both the franchise and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Will Phil Salt Play in IPL 2026 Again?

For now, both Salt and RCB remain hopeful. The scans are anticipated to shed light on the situation, with early signs suggesting that the injury is not season-ending. The goal is for Salt to recover in time to return to India later this month and rejoin RCB for the final stretch of the tournament.

In the meantime, Bethell is expected to keep his spot at the top of the order, with Jordan Cox available as an alternative. RCB does have the option to sign a replacement should Salt’s injury worsen, but the immediate focus is on getting him back into the lineup.

Currently, RCB is enjoying a brief mid-season break after their loss to the Gujarat Titans, with their next match against the Lucknow Super Giants. Salt’s potential return for this game or later in the season could significantly impact their quest to defend their title.
