BCCI Plans to Rethink Impact Player Rule Post-IPL 2026: Devajit Saikia

Controversial Impact Player Rule Under Review by BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to take a closer look at the much-discussed Impact Player Rule after the 2026 IPL season wraps up. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia noted that this topic has been under discussion for the past two years, especially as critics voice their concerns.

Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player Rule aims to bring more excitement to the Indian Premier League. This rule allows teams to swap any player for another, enabling them to strengthen either their batting or bowling lineup according to the match situation.

Challenges of the Impact Player Rule

One of the main issues with this rule is that it lets teams play with eight batters, allowing them to replace one with a bowler. Given that pitches in the IPL are becoming flatter, this means teams can score incredibly high totals, giving batters a clear advantage.

This season has seen a surge in scores exceeding 250 runs. For example, in a recent match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, the latter scored a staggering 264 runs but still lost. Punjab Kings, thanks to the Impact Player rule, reached their target in just 19 overs, marking a record achievement in T20 history. Similarly, SunRisers Hyderabad chased down a massive target of 244 runs against Mumbai Indians in only 18.4 overs.

Another downside is the diminished presence of all-rounders, as teams now lean more towards specialist batters or bowlers, depending on their needs during games. Critics warn that this could eventually hurt the Indian national team, as the Impact Player Rule is not applied in international cricket.

BCCI’s Response and Future Plans

Despite the criticisms, Saikia mentioned that there haven’t been significant complaints from IPL teams regarding the rule. He highlighted that this season has seen a mix of high and low-scoring matches, suggesting that fans are enjoying the variety. “Some teams are chasing totals of 260, while others are scoring low,” he explained, emphasizing the overall excitement of the tournament.

While Saikia defends the rule, he confirmed that a thorough review will take place once the IPL season ends on May 31. “This discussion has been ongoing for the last two years. We will take a closer look after the tournament, but we can’t make changes in the middle of it,” he stated.

Currently, there has been no formal request to reevaluate the Impact Player Rule from any teams. “I read it in the media, but we haven’t received an official demand. If that changes, we’ll consider it,” he concluded.

Stay Tuned for Updates

As the IPL continues, fans and teams will be watching closely to see how the Impact Player Rule evolves in the future.
