If you received an emergency alert on your phone, there’s no need to worry. This notification is part of a nationwide test of India’s Cell Broadcasting system, which aims to quickly send warnings for various disasters.

Recently, the government sent out test messages in both English and Hindi to mobile phones. During this testing phase, recipients do not need to take any action. Here, we explain what this alert system is, why it’s important, and how it functions.

What is the Cell Broadcasting System?

Cell Broadcasting (CB) is a technology that enables the government to send emergency alerts to mobile phones within a specific area. Unlike regular text messages sent to individuals, these alerts go out in “broadcast mode,” meaning they reach all mobile devices in a designated location at the same time.

Why is the Emergency Notification System Important?

This system is essential for saving lives during emergencies. It delivers alerts much faster than standard SMS, ensuring that warning messages are sent out in almost real-time. The system provides immediate warnings for:

  • Natural disasters: Such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and severe storms.
  • Man-made emergencies: Like gas leaks or chemical spills.
  • Urgent weather events: Including cyclones and other severe weather warnings.

How Does the Emergency Notification System Work?

The system relies on specialized technology that uses “geo-targeting” to send alerts only to people located in affected areas. For instance, if there’s an earthquake in Gujarat, everyone’s mobile phone connected to the nearby cell towers will receive the alert simultaneously.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) operates an Integrated Alert System called SACHET, which complies with international standards to ensure reliable delivery across various mobile networks.

Who Created This System?

This emergency alert system has been entirely developed in India. The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) is the main research and development center behind the technology, working alongside the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the NDMA.

Coverage and Languages Available

The system is set up to cover the entire country and is functional in all 36 states and Union Territories. To make sure everyone understands the alerts, they are available in more than 19 Indian languages, including English and Hindi. According to the Ministry of Communications, the system has issued over 134 billion alerts during various disasters in multiple languages.

What Did the Test Message Say?

The test message reads: “This is a TEST Cell Broadcast message sent by the National Disaster Management Authority, in coordination with the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. You might receive this message several times during the testing. Please ignore these messages; no action is needed on your part.”

This alert is not only texted but is also read aloud when received.

In summary, this emergency alert system is crucial for informing and safeguarding the public during disasters, ensuring that help is delivered when needed most.
