Two Stabbed in North London: Police Classify Incident as Terrorism

On Wednesday, two individuals were stabbed in north London, leading police to label the attack as a terrorist incident. This has prompted a significant emergency response and a counterterrorism investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of the Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism unit, stated that the attack is officially classified as terrorism. Investigators are currently looking into the motives behind the incident, including whether it targeted the local Jewish community.

Emergency services were alerted to the situation on Highfield Avenue in the Barnet borough around 11:16 a.m. Local police and armed units quickly responded, along with the London Ambulance Service.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody. Police are working to determine more about his background and nationality.

The victims, aged 76 and 34, were treated for their injuries at the scene before being taken to a hospital, where they remain under care.

Authorities mentioned that the suspect also attacked officers who responded, but no police personnel were harmed.

Counterterrorism officials are now leading the investigation, collaborating with security services to gather more information and assess the situation thoroughly. “This investigation is in its early stages, but we are making swift progress to understand the events,” said Taylor.

The stabbing happened near Golders Green, a part of London known for its large Jewish community. Investigators are particularly focused on whether this attack was aimed at Jewish individuals, although a confirmed motive hasn’t yet emerged.

A community group called Shomrim reported that a man with a knife was seen on Golders Green Road and that their members detained him until authorities arrived. However, police have not verified this detail.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams stated that officers acted quickly, using a Taser to restrain the suspect before he could inflict more harm. He assured the public that all possible motives are being examined and that police presence in the area will be bolstered.

The incident has raised alarms over rising antisemitic events in the UK. Officials are reviewing recent cases in London but have not found any direct links.

Following the attack, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, asserting that assaults on Jewish residents amount to an attack on the nation. London Mayor Sadiq Khan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that there is no place for antisemitism in the city.

Concerns over violence against Jewish individuals, described by Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch as a national emergency, highlight a worrying trend.

Dov Forman, a local Holocaust educator, voiced his fears that this attack signifies a more extensive and troubling pattern of violence. He mentioned the growing extremist rhetoric influencing hatred toward Jews.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his horror over the attack and called for urgent measures to prevent further violence against Jews, stressing that no one should be targeted for their faith.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
