Trump Calls Off Iran Peace Talks, Citing U.S. Advantage
President Donald Trump has decided to cancel a diplomatic visit to Pakistan for peace discussions with Iran. He mentioned that the United States has “all the cards,” allowing Iran’s leaders to reach out whenever they wish. This decision comes amid stalled negotiations, with heightened U.S. military presence in the Strait of Hormuz and new sanctions placed on nearly 40 Iranian oil entities linked to China.
Reports indicate that Iran’s negotiating team is facing internal issues, leading to a potential change in leadership. Hardliner Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf may be replaced by Saeed Jalili, a seasoned conservative known for his strong stand against nuclear concessions. Jalili has been recognized as a key figure within Iran’s ultra-conservative faction.
Ali Safavi, a representative of the Iranian opposition coalition, pointed out that Jalili has transitioned from being a nuclear negotiator to a more influential role within the regime. Ghalibaf’s exit appears to be due to backlash against his approach to the nuclear talks with Washington, highlighting ongoing divisions among Iran’s leaders.
Trump’s cancellation of the peace talks has added to these tensions, particularly as the rivalry between Jalili and Ghalibaf has been longstanding. This rivalry became more pronounced during the recent elections, contributing to the rise of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also active in negotiations, emphasizing the competition in Iran’s diplomatic strategies. He recently visited Islamabad after discussions in Oman and is expected to travel to Moscow soon.
