President Trump Optimistic About Iran Peace Deal
Washington: President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Friday that a peace agreement with Iran is nearly within reach, stating there are “no sticking points” left to resolve. In a brief phone conversation with AFP, he mentioned that this deal could benefit everyone involved.
Trump’s remarks followed his recent social media updates highlighting progress in re-opening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran’s nuclear program. “We’re very close. Looks like it’s going to be very good for everybody. And we’re very close to having a deal,” he said from Las Vegas.
He further noted, “The strait’s going to be open; it already is open. And things are going very well.”
Last weekend, the initial round of talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan did not result in an agreement, but Trump indicated that a second round of negotiations could take place soon. He reiterated that the primary requirement from the US side is for Iran to ensure it cannot develop nuclear weapons, adding that Iran had agreed to hand over its enriched uranium stockpile.
When queried about any remaining issues that could hinder an agreement, Trump stated, “No sticking points at all.” He clarified that he prefers to have a formal deal documented before making any public announcements. “I don’t do that; I get it in writing,” he concluded.
