MS Dhoni: India’s Finest White-Ball Captain, Says Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly: MS Dhoni is India’s Best White-Ball Captain

In a heartfelt discussion about Indian cricket leadership, former captain Sourav Ganguly declared MS Dhoni as the greatest white-ball captain the country has seen. Speaking at the TV9 WITT Summit 2026, Ganguly set aside his own impressive achievements to address the often-discussed comparison between himself and Dhoni.

Ganguly emphasized success as the key factor in his assessment, pointing out that Dhoni’s record shines through in the number of trophies he has won. “MS Dhoni has lifted the World Cup, whereas I was a runner-up,” Ganguly noted, referring to India’s glorious 2011 victory compared to his experience in the 2003 final against Australia.

He further stated, “He has led India in three World Cups. Back in my day, we had no T20 cricket—only the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. MS Dhoni’s achievements as a white-ball captain are extraordinary.”

Dhoni, who started his international journey under Ganguly’s captaincy in 2004, led India to victories in the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013, making him the first captain to achieve this remarkable feat in white-ball cricket.

Ganguly, now the Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee and Head Coach of Pretoria Capitals, proudly spoke about Dhoni’s humble beginnings in Jharkhand, a region that often went unnoticed by national selectors. “I take pride that he came from a small place like Jharkhand. Before him, not many players from there made it to the national team. His story inspires pride,” he said.

He highlighted what he calls the “Dhoni effect,” noting how Dhoni’s success has encouraged young players like Ishan Kishan and promising talent like Vaibhav Suryavanshi. “When someone from a state makes it to the top, it inspires others. If Mahi can do it, so can I,” Ganguly explained.

During his time under Ganguly’s captaincy, Dhoni played 12 ODIs, accumulating 418 runs with an impressive strike rate. Ganguly also had the chance to play under Dhoni’s leadership in the later part of his career, scoring 530 runs in 12 matches.

Ganguly’s Affection for Young Dhoni

While fans admire Dhoni’s calm demeanor, Ganguly candidly shared his love for the young, bold version of Dhoni—the one who stepped onto the field with long hair and daring strokes. “I preferred the young Dhoni; he was able to hit sixes so effortlessly. That long-haired MS Dhoni could clear the ropes under pressure,” he recalled.

Ganguly expressed regional pride in Dhoni’s achievements, stating, “Being from Bengal, I feel proud that he represents Jharkhand. Regions like ours haven’t produced many cricketers compared to others like Mumbai or Delhi.”

As for Dhoni’s future, he is set to return to the field in IPL 2026. Now at 44 years old, the former captain will represent the Chennai Super Kings as they kick off their season against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30.

This conversation showcases not just the respect Ganguly has for Dhoni, but also the deep-rooted connection they both share as representatives of cricketing regions that continue to nurture new talent.
