Aakash Chopra Champions MS Dhoni as CSK’s Captain for IPL 2026

Aakash Chopra Advocates for MS Dhoni’s Leadership Role in IPL 2026

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has voiced strong support for MS Dhoni to continue as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. With speculation surrounding Dhoni’s future growing, Chopra’s comments have sparked renewed discussion among fans and analysts alike.

Dhoni’s 19th IPL Season on the Horizon

As Dhoni prepares for his 19th season in the IPL, he is expected to remain a part of the CSK squad, albeit with a more flexible role. On a recent episode of JioHotstar, Chopra emphasized that if Dhoni is part of the playing XI, he should also lead the team.

“Look, if Dhoni is playing, then he has to be the captain. I believe if he’s on the field for 20 overs, he should be leading the side,” Chopra stated. He further challenged anyone to find a better captain on the field, asserting, “If he’s there, then why not let him lead?”

Transition at CSK

Chopra’s remarks come as CSK navigates a transition phase, with Ruturaj Gaikwad stepping up as captain after Dhoni stepped down ahead of the 2024 season. Meanwhile, Dhoni’s on-field responsibilities have been gradually decreasing in recent years, as he has often been utilized as a finisher during the final overs. This change has been influenced by the introduction of the impact substitute rule, which has further limited his role.

Despite these adjustments, Dhoni’s presence remains vital, both on and off the field. His vast experience is expected to be a crucial asset for the team, particularly after a challenging season in 2025 when CSK finished at the bottom of the table.

Future Plans for CSK

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that Dhoni will be available for the entire IPL 2026 season, although his exact role is still to be determined by the team management. As CSK aims to rebound under Gaikwad’s leadership, the ongoing question is whether Dhoni will serve primarily as a mentor or, as Chopra suggests, reclaim his role as captain.

As fans eagerly await the new season, the discussion around MS Dhoni’s future the CSK squad continues to be a hot topic.
