Harry Brook: Ignoring Pakistan in The Hundred Would Be a Missed Opportunity

England Captain Advocates for Inclusion of Pakistani Players in The Hundred

Harry Brook, the captain of the England cricket team, has expressed disappointment over reports suggesting that Pakistani players might not be included in this year’s edition of The Hundred. The BBC recently reported that teams in the tournament, which are partly owned by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, may choose to avoid selecting players from Pakistan during the upcoming auction for the 2026 season, scheduled from July 21 to August 16.

This season promises to bring increased salaries for players, thanks to new private investments that have enhanced the tournament’s financial support. Four out of the eight teams—Manchester Super Giants, MI London, Southern Brave, and Sunrisers Leeds—are now partially owned by entities that also manage IPL teams.

Unfortunately, Pakistani players may miss out on these financial benefits. Since 2009, franchises owned by IPL stakeholders have not signed any Pakistani cricketers, a situation attributed to ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan. Brook is set to play for Sunrisers Leeds, which was previously known as Northern Superchargers.

In a press conference before England’s Super 8 match against Sri Lanka, Brook highlighted Pakistan’s rich cricketing history, suggesting that their players could enhance the competition. “Our focus right now is on the T20 World Cup. But it would be a shame not to see some of the talented Pakistani players in The Hundred auction,” Brook stated. “They’re fantastic cricketers who can draw great crowds, and their presence would surely elevate the tournament.”

Vaughan Calls for Action on Pakistani Players’ Inclusion

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has also urged the England Cricket Board (ECB) to take immediate steps to ensure that Pakistani players are allowed to participate in The Hundred. Vaughan emphasized that the ECB should not let IPL owners influence this decision.

“The ECB needs to act quickly. They own the league, and it’s vital that this doesn’t happen. Our sport should be open and inclusive,” he remarked.

The first-ever auction for The Hundred will take place on March 11 for women and March 12 for men, generating anticipation about whether teams like Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Welsh Fire, and Trent Rockets will bid for any Pakistani players.

As discussions unfold, cricket fans are eager to see how this situation develops.
