Slovakia has made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 2002, following a decisive 2-0 victory over Australia on Sunday. Viktoria Hruncakova and Rebecca Sramkova both achieved singles wins to secure the triumph.

In a gripping battle, Hruncakova triumphed over Kimberly Birrell with scores of 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3, a match that lasted two hours and thirty minutes. Despite being ranked 126 places lower than Birrell, Hruncakova showcased her skills with an impressive 32 winners, while Birrell struggled with 37 unforced errors. Meanwhile, Sramkova, ranked 43rd in the world, easily defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, with Tomljanovic hampered by a knee injury.

Slovakia previously pulled off a remarkable upset against the 18-time champions, the United States, and they are now set to face either the defending champions Canada or Britain in the semi-finals.

In other news, Poland also advanced to the semi-finals after a thrilling 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. This intense tie lasted well into early Sunday morning. The Czech player Marie Bouzkova started strong, defeating Magdalena Frech with scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

However, Poland’s hopes remained alive thanks to world number two Iga Swiatek, who battled through a tough match against rising star Linda Noskova. Swiatek, unbeaten in the Billie Jean King Cup for five years, edged out Noskova with a scoreline of 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5 after nearly two hours and forty minutes of play. Despite Noskova breaking back to level the score at 4-4 in the final set, Swiatek held her composure to ultimately win the match and tie the contest at 1-1.

To clinch the victory, Swiatek paired up with Katarzyna Kawa for the crucial doubles match, where they defeated Katerina Siniakova and Bouzkova 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour. This win marks a significant milestone for Poland as they reach the semi-finals for the first time in the tournament’s history.
