An amateur boxer from Iran, Sepehr Ebrahimi, tragically lost his life during protests against the government near Tehran. His father, distraught and desperate, spent a week searching for his son and ultimately identified him in a black body bag.
Footage shared on social media captures the heart-wrenching moment when Ebrahimi’s father searches through a warehouse filled with unidentified bodies, calling out for his son. “My dear Sepehr, where are you?” he cries, in a powerful plea filled with grief. He also expresses anger towards the Iranian leadership, blaming them for the violence that has taken many young lives.
Ebrahimi, just 19 years old, was reportedly shot by Iranian security forces during the unrest. Reports indicate that he was hit with live ammunition as protests erupted against the country’s clerical regime.
The family’s difficult journey included visits to hospitals, morgues, and detention centers to find him before ultimately recognizing his body among others. The nation is currently witnessing ongoing demonstrations fueled by years of political repression, economic struggles, and human rights violations.
Ebrahimi’s situation has drawn renewed attention to the case of another Iranian boxer, Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani, who has been sentenced to death after participating in pro-democracy protests in 2020. He has faced severe mistreatment while incarcerated and is considered a target due to his alleged links to opposition groups.
As the protests continue, the death toll is rising. Recent reports indicate that over 6,100 people have died since the protests began, including both civilians and government-affiliated forces. Many other fatalities remain unverified, highlighting the ongoing turmoil in Iran.
