As Bangladesh Faces Political Shift, Indian High Commissioner Engages with BNP Leader Tarique Rahman

Indian High Commissioner Meets BNP Leader Amid Political Changes in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Kumar Verma, had a meeting with Tarique Rahman, the new Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Saturday. This meeting occurred just a day after Rahman officially took on the role, following the recent passing of his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

This meeting is significant as it comes at a time of political change in Bangladesh. Tarique Rahman has stepped into his new role after the leadership position became vacant due to Khaleda Zia’s death on December 30. The political climate has been tense, particularly with rising violence against Hindus in the country after the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in the July 2024 uprising, which led to the establishment of a new interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

On Friday, the BNP announced Rahman’s new position in a post on social media, stating he was appointed unanimously by the National Standing Committee. The party clarified that the appointment followed proper constitutional procedures within the BNP.

Following Khaleda Zia’s death, the party noted, “The position of Chairman was vacant, and Mr. Tarique Rahman has officially assumed the role.” His new leadership is seen as a strategic move to position him as a potential candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming national elections scheduled for February.

Rahman’s return to Bangladesh last month marked a significant moment, as he had spent nearly 17 years in exile due to political issues. He left the country during the 2007-08 crisis and settled in London. After the change in government, he was cleared of several charges, allowing his return.

His return was celebrated by numerous supporters, indicating strong backing for him as the party heads into election season. Currently, the country is being managed by an interim government under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Laureate.

Additionally, last month, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Rahman in Dhaka to express condolences over Khaleda Zia’s passing. Jaishankar also delivered a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the enduring relationship between India and Bangladesh, guided by Khaleda Zia’s legacy.
