Colombian President Issues Strong Statement Against U.S. Actions
In a bold statement on Monday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared he would “take up arms” if the United States attacked Colombia, following recent U.S. military operations in Venezuela that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro.
Petro, who once belonged to the leftist M-19 guerrilla group, shared his thoughts on social media, responding to comments from former President Trump, who suggested Colombia might be a target in the ongoing U.S. war on drugs. “Although I am not a soldier, I understand the realities of war,” Petro expressed. Despite his past, Petro reaffirmed he had vowed not to use weapons since the 1989 Peace Pact but emphasized that he would defend his country if necessary.
Dismissing Trump’s claims of drug trafficking affiliation, Petro stated plainly, “I am not illegitimate, nor am I a narco.” He asserted his honesty by highlighting that his bank statements are public and reflect his income.
Trump’s remarks came as he spoke to reporters on Air Force One, labeling Colombia as “very sick” and claiming its leadership was involved in drug production. He further criticized Petro, asserting he operates “cocaine mills and factories.”
When asked about potential U.S. military action in Colombia, Trump seemed supportive, stating, “It sounds good to me.” This echoed earlier threats made by Trump, warning Petro to “wise up” or risk becoming a target.
Petro has fiercely opposed Trump’s policies, especially condemning U.S. military operations aimed at suspected drug smuggling vessels. He argued that many casualties in such operations are innocent fishermen forced into the drug trade for survival. In a strong rebuke, he called Trump a “barbarian” and briefly halted intelligence sharing with the U.S. last November.
The narcotics trade in Colombia is largely under the control of illegal armed groups, including the Gulf Clan and the ELN. Petro warned that any U.S. bombing campaign would only fuel radicalization among rural communities, potentially leading to the rise of armed resistance.
The tense exchange comes amid a complicated relationship, with the Trump administration previously revoking Petro’s visa due to alleged reckless actions. In a recent tweet, the U.S. State Department noted Petro’s call for U.S. soldiers to disobey orders.
The situation continues to unfold as tensions rise between the two leaders and their nations.
