Bangladesh Aims for Stronger Ties with India

Kolkata: Recently, Bangladesh expressed its intention to enhance its diplomatic relationship with India. High Commissioner Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah stated on Wednesday that the country is looking to create a “new canvas” for cooperation, suggesting a promising shared future.

This announcement follows a gesture from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached out to Bangladesh regarding the health of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, hinting at a warming of relations between New Delhi and Dhaka.

Hamidullah, who has served as Bangladesh’s ambassador in New Delhi for eight months, emphasized the need for both nations to consider a united future, despite having various challenges and differing viewpoints. He highlighted that focusing solely on one issue would not fully represent the complexities of their relationship. His remarks came during a session hosted by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

Describing the relationship as “organic,” he noted the rapid growth in economic ties, with trade between India and Bangladesh exceeding $25 billion. Hamidullah believes that increased economic engagement, particularly in tourism and logistics, shows the potential for further collaboration.

He also mentioned that Bangladesh has not restricted Indian visitors and emphasized the “mutual interdependence” between the two countries. He pointed to a Reserve Bank of India report indicating a potential 12% rise in trade.

While specific plans are still under wraps, Hamidullah revealed that there is a Bengali film festival being organized for next year in New Delhi. He suggested encouraging tours for Indians wanting to visit their ancestral roots in Bangladesh. As Dhaka embraces cultural diplomacy and seeks deeper economic integration, the envoy’s comments signal a clear intention to broaden engagement between the two countries during this sensitive period in their relationship.
