Ethiopian Asylum Seeker Unintentionally Released Following Sexual Assault Verdict in the UK

UK Immigration System Faces Criticism After Dangerous Release

Britain’s immigration system is under scrutiny after an Ethiopian asylum seeker, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, was mistakenly released from prison. The 38-year-old man had previously been sentenced to 12 months for sexual assault and has now prompted a manhunt.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his outrage, labeling the release “totally unacceptable.” Kebatu’s arrest in July had previously sparked protests outside the Bell Hotel, a shelter for migrants in Epping, located around 20 miles from London.

Currently, the home secretary reports that over 400 hotels are being used to house asylum seekers, costing nearly £9 million per day.

British officials indicated that Kebatu was intended to be transferred to an immigration detention center for deportation but was accidentally let go instead. This error has raised alarms, with calls for a full investigation into how this mistake occurred.

David Lammy, Secretary of State for Justice, voiced his concern on social media, stating the urgency to find Kebatu and ensure he is deported, emphasizing the need for public safety. Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch criticized the government, alleging the entire immigration system is in disarray under Labour leadership.

Calls for accountability underscore broader frustrations about the management of asylum seekers and the implications for community safety. As authorities work to locate Kebatu, the incident highlights ongoing debates surrounding immigration policies and public safety in the UK.
