Clear Protein: The New Trend in Health Foods

Protein is becoming increasingly popular in our diets, appearing in everything from snacks to drinks. Recently, a new type of protein is gaining attention: clear protein.

In the past year, high-protein foods have seen a rise in demand as people search for options that help with muscle repair, immune health, and metabolism. While protein shakes have long been favored by fitness enthusiasts, clear protein is now stepping into the spotlight. Made from whey protein isolate, clear protein is available in ready-to-drink bottles or as powder that mixes easily with water, creating colorful, juice-like drinks.

According to The Vitamin Shoppe, searches for “clear protein” increased by 11% in July, marking its place as a popular search term for seven consecutive months.

Brands like Isopure Protein Water, Premier Protein Clear, and Ryse offer ready-to-drink options, while flavored powders from Alani Nu, Ghost, and Transparent Labs provide choices in flavors such as lemonade and tropical punch.

Registered dietitian Lauren Manaker explains that clear protein fills a need for those who want protein without the heaviness of traditional shakes. It’s also visually appealing, making it an attractive option for healthy, on-the-go meals.

Whey protein isolate, used in clear protein, is typically lower in fat, carbs, and calories than whey concentrate, making it a good choice for individuals with digestive issues. It generally contains a higher ratio of protein per serving.

Both types of protein—isolate and concentrate—offer about 20 to 25 grams of protein per serving. They are easily absorbed, though some experts believe that the isolate form is slightly better for post-workout recovery because of its purity.

However, experts caution that clear protein isn’t automatically healthier. According to dietitian Lena Beal, it’s essentially the same protein but in a lighter format. Although the product isn’t new—it has been used in hospitals for many years to help patients with limited diets—it’s now gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers.

Despite the trend’s positive aspects, it’s worth noting that clear protein does often include artificial flavors and sweeteners since it lacks the natural fats and sugars found in traditional protein powders. It can also be more expensive.

Ultimately, both clear protein and traditional protein powders can be beneficial for boosting protein intake. The best choice depends on your personal health goals and lifestyle.

The recommended daily intake of protein is around 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight for healthy adults, but many professionals suggest higher amounts for athletes, older adults, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Both forms of protein provide essential amino acids, making them great options for anyone looking to increase their protein consumption.
