Veteran Actor Achyut Potdar Passes Away at 91

Achyut Potdar, a beloved veteran actor recognized for his role as a college professor in the classic film 3 Idiots, has sadly passed away at the age of 91. He died on Monday in Thane, Maharashtra, after being hospitalized at Jupiter Hospital for health complications related to aging. The specific cause of his death has yet to be disclosed.

Before his distinguished acting career, Potdar served his country as a captain in the Indian Army. He later worked as a professor and spent nearly 25 years in a corporate role with Indian Oil Corporation, retiring in 1992. Remarkably, he began his journey in Bollywood at the age of 44 and quickly became one of the most recognized character actors in Indian cinema.

Throughout his career, Potdar appeared in over 125 films and almost 100 television series. Known for his dignified presence and diverse roles — often portraying professors, doctors, judges, or father figures — he became a household name. His memorable line from 3 Idiots, “Kehna kya chahte ho,” has gained immense popularity among fans and online communities.

His filmography includes notable works such as Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator. Potdar was also a familiar face on television, featuring in shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, Wagle Ki Duniya, Mrs. Tendulkar, and Majha Hoshil Na.

Following the news of his passing, tributes flooded in from fans and colleagues alike. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta expressed that it was a “privilege” to work with him, praising his warmth, humility, and sincerity both on and off-screen.

Achyut Potdar’s funeral will take place in Thane on August 19. His remarkable journey — from soldier and teacher to one of Bollywood’s cherished character actors — leaves a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.
