Ravi Shastri, the former coach of the Indian cricket team, has criticized the management’s choice to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the crucial Test at Edgbaston, especially after a week without matches. Bumrah’s absence is notable among several changes the team has made for this match. Coach Gautam Gambhir previously stated that the plan was for Bumrah to play in three Tests, and he would not alter this approach even after a loss at Headingley.
Shastri expressed his disbelief at the decision to rest Bumrah, whom he considers one of the best fast bowlers in the world. Speaking to Sky Sports, he highlighted the importance of this Test for India, considering their recent struggles, including losses against New Zealand and Australia, and the first Test defeat in this series.
He remarked, “After losing several matches, this Test is crucial. With the best bowler in your team available but not playing after a week off, it’s hard to understand.”
Shastri believes that decisions about resting players should be made by the captain and coaching staff, not the players themselves. He emphasized that given the significance of this match in the series, Bumrah should be on the field.
“I’m surprised Bumrah isn’t playing. Captains and coaches should decide who plays, especially in important games like this one,” Shastri added.
In addition to Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur were also left out, making way for Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar. Shastri felt it was unfortunate for Sudharsan, who he believed performed well in the last match but still lost his spot.
“Bumrah’s place was taken by Akash Deep in the lineup, leaving everyone anticipating how the team will perform in his absence,” Shastri noted.
