The Delhi Capitals have been a part of the IPL since its beginning, yet they still seek their first title. Formerly called the Delhi Daredevils, the team has featured several star players, but unfortunately, their performance hasn’t matched fan expectations. The closest they came to glory was in 2020 when they lost to the Mumbai Indians in the finals.
This season, however, brought new optimism as the team made some bold moves. They decided to part ways with Rishabh Pant, the long-time captain and face of the franchise, opting to make Axar Patel the new skipper. They also chose to keep trusted players like Kuldeep Yadav and Tristan Stubbs while securing impressive signings in Mitchell Starc, KL Rahul, and Faf du Plessis, as well as emerging talents Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam.
The season started off strong for the Capitals, winning their first four matches and looking like serious title contenders, especially with KL Rahul leading the batting lineup. Their place in the playoffs seemed almost guaranteed at that point. Even during their first loss to the Mumbai Indians, they demonstrated good form, keeping them among the favorites.
However, a troubling trend emerged as DC lost three of their last five matches, with a rain-affected game against SRH resulting in a fortunate point for them after scoring just 133 runs.
After their initial success, many fans, including former player Shane Watson, expressed surprise at the team’s decline. “I thought they were going to be hard to beat,” he remarked, highlighting the sudden change in fortunes.
### A Look Back at DC’s History
Historically, the Delhi Capitals have had a rollercoaster ride in the IPL. They started strong in the early seasons, reaching the semi-finals in their first two years and topping the points table in 2012. However, they stumbled in critical playoff matches. In both 2010 and 2016, they began with impressive winning records, only to collapse when it mattered most, finishing just outside playoff positions.
This season, it appears that some difficulties are self-inflicted.
### The Missing Link: Harry Brook
When Harry Brook withdrew from the IPL 2025 season, many expected DC to bring in a replacement. Although he pulled out back in March, as of May, no new signing has been made. Potential options like Dewald Brevis for middle-order support or Lhuan-Dre Pretorious for opening roles could have strengthened the team.
### Experimentation at the Top
This season has seen Delhi change their opening pairs six times. While Faf du Plessis’ early injury contributed to this, such instability is detrimental for a team aiming for the playoffs. In their latest game, Karun Nair opened alongside Du Plessis, resulting in a disappointing failure right from the start.
Watson voiced his surprise, stating, “The changes felt random and unnecessary.”
### Do They Need a Miracle?
DC now faces significant challenges, with matches against PBKS, GT, and MI on the horizon—teams also vying for playoff spots. Watson emphasized the need to return to basics, noting that confidence seems to be lacking within the squad.
“Cricket is about confidence and momentum. Delhi hasn’t played well in the last few games, making it tough to expect a turnaround,” he stated.
While the Capitals possess the talent to recover from this slump, it’s clear that the path ahead is steep. Watson reflected on the situation, suggesting that a rapid recovery may seem like a miracle but is still attainable.
Time is running out for Delhi to reclaim their form. The familiar struggle is looming, and the pressure to perform before the playoffs intensifies.
