India Boosts Trade Negotiations with Key Visits to the US and Peru
Next week, India’s Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and a senior official from the Commerce Ministry will head to the United States for crucial discussions with the Trump administration. This visit is part of India’s strategic effort to strengthen economic ties with key trade partners.
Officials revealed that Sitharaman’s trip to the US aligns with recent talks held with the European Union and the United Kingdom, following a well-thought-out strategy. While Sitharaman focuses on easing discussions, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s teams will engage in detailed negotiations.
As part of her agenda, Sitharaman will embark on a journey to the US and Peru beginning April 20. This visit includes high-level meetings with important global financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, as well as participation in several G20 meetings.
Upon her arrival in the US, Sitharaman is expected to connect with senior officials, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. At the same time, Rajesh Agrawal, India’s chief negotiator for the bilateral trade deal with the US, will be in Washington for technical talks to address issues during a 90-day tariff pause.
Agrawal’s visit is focused on resolving technical matters and comes as he has been appointed as the new Commerce Secretary, set to take office on October 1. His discussions are seen as a stepping stone for future negotiations, with leaders from India and the US aiming to conclude the first phase of their trade agreement by September-October 2025.
Both nations are eager to wrap up initial negotiations ahead of schedule, as India pursues an open trade policy with the US. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump recently committed to enhancing the US-India trade relationship, with the goal of increasing bilateral trade from approximately $200 billion to $500 billion by 2030.
Following the recent completion of the first round of negotiations in New Delhi, Agrawal’s upcoming visit is anticipated to address some technical issues and pave the way for subsequent discussions.
The US remains India’s largest trading partner, representing around 18% of India’s total exports and a notable percentage of its imports. Currently, India enjoys a trade surplus with the US, though recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have caused some tension.
After her meetings in the US, Sitharaman will head to Peru, where India is working on a free trade agreement, particularly focused on importing essential minerals. Her Peru visit comes shortly after the seventh round of negotiations concluded in New Delhi.
Sitharaman has also recently returned from the UK, where she met with various leaders, including the British Prime Minister and key ministers, stressing the importance of these international discussions as part of India’s broader strategy to boost exports and foster economic growth.
