Thirteen Years Later, ‘Shahid’ Makes Its Streaming Debut
Thirteen years after its debut in theaters, the acclaimed film Shahid has found its way to a streaming platform. Directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Rajkummar Rao, this National Award-winning film is now available on Prime Video, allowing more viewers to experience its powerful narrative after years of limited digital access.
Released in 2013, Shahid tells the true story of Shahid Azmi, a lawyer and human rights activist who met a tragic end in Mumbai in 2010. Rajkummar Rao’s portrayal of Azmi, alongside a talented cast including Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Prabhleen Sandhu, brings a poignant story to life. The film was recognized at the 61st National Film Awards, with Mehta winning Best Director and Rao receiving the Best Actor award, sharing the honor with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu.
Writer and editor Apurva Asrani reflected on the film’s long wait for streaming availability in a recent post. He expressed curiosity about why Shahid, despite its accolades, took so long to emerge on digital platforms. In his tweet, Asrani noted the film’s significance in presenting Shahid Azmi’s brave fight for justice, especially in an era where many activists faced scrutiny and danger.
Asrani also raised concerns about the challenges artists face in creating politically charged narratives. He mentioned that many filmmakers interested in similar stories often struggle to bring their projects to life or feel pressured to align their work with the prevailing political climate.
With the film finally streaming in 2026, Asrani pondered the timing of its release. He asked whether it reflects a shift in societal attitudes towards fear and dissent. He expressed pride in Shahid, as it marked a key moment in his career as a co-writer and editor, and urged viewers to watch the film, emphasizing its importance in the cinematic landscape.
Shahid holds a significant place in the careers of both Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao, being a poignant reminder of the kind of impactful cinema that tells vital stories of courage and justice.
