Mysterious Tick-Borne Virus Tied to Low Platelet Count and Liver Damage

New Tick-Borne Virus Found in China: What You Need to Know

Researchers in China have discovered a new tick-borne virus that can lead to flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and digestive issues. This virus, called the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), is part of a larger family of viruses known as orthonairoviruses. In addition to flu-like symptoms, it may also reduce blood platelet counts and cause liver inflammation.

Since 2009, scientists have been monitoring patients with strange illnesses, including a serious condition known as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). Dr. Sharon Nachman, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in New York, noted that the mortality rate for these complicated cases can be high, around 30%.

While many of these cases were linked to another tick-borne virus called Dabie bandavirus (DBV), not all patients had it; this highlights the varied nature of tick-related illnesses.

Through comprehensive tests on blood samples, researchers identified ALTNV in about 10.4% of 3,163 patients who had been bitten by ticks. It’s notable that those who had both ALTNV and DBV showed higher chances of respiratory issues and kidney complications, with some fatalities reported during the study.

The findings were shared in the New England Journal of Medicine, raising awareness of the wide array of viruses that ticks can carry. Dr. Nachman commented on the importance of identifying these threats promptly, especially in areas where SFTS is common.

Symptoms of ALTNV Infection

People infected with ALTNV may initially experience symptoms similar to the flu, including fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. While the virus can lead to low blood platelet levels, it wasn’t directly linked to severe bleeding or deaths among patients, particularly since fatal cases often involved co-infection with DBV.

Dr. Nachman emphasizes that effective antiviral treatments exist for the flu but not for many tick-borne viruses, including ALTNV. Generally, supportive care is crucial to help manage symptoms, and doctors should be cautious not to prescribe antibiotics, as they are ineffective against viruses.

Preventing Tick Bites

To avoid tick bites, Dr. Nachman recommends wearing appropriate clothing, such as long pants tucked into socks, and using tick repellents. After outdoor activities like hiking, checking for ticks on the skin is essential. The longer a tick stays on the skin, the higher the risk of transmitting infections.

While the Asian longhorned tick has not been reported in the U.S. yet, Dr. Nachman reminds us that many other ticks carry various diseases. Individual health conditions also play a role in how tick-borne diseases affect people, making it crucial for everyone to take preventive measures seriously.

In conclusion, as new discoveries like ALTNV emerge, staying informed and vigilant can help protect against tick-related illnesses.
