India’s Finance Minister Promotes Investment Opportunities in Chicago

CHICAGO — August 29, 2026: Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, has made an important visit to Chicago as part of her six-day official trip to the United States. Her agenda focused on presenting India as a reliable, vibrant, and long-term destination for global investments, emphasizing opportunities in manufacturing, innovation, and economic collaboration.

During her visit, Sitharaman met with key business leaders in the U.S. and participated in a significant business roundtable. She engaged with the Indian-American community, highlighting India’s growing economic landscape, ongoing reforms, infrastructure developments, and new opportunities across various sectors.

The Finance Minister’s United States itinerary included stops in Chicago, Asheville, and New York. Her discussions addressed wide-reaching topics including the G20 meetings, and she held significant talks with corporate leaders and members of the Indian diaspora.

A standout moment in Chicago was the business roundtable organized by the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum in partnership with the Indian Consulate. Here, Sitharaman encouraged international investors to consider India for their manufacturing and innovation needs. She stressed India’s status as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing consumer markets, highlighting the potential for businesses to thrive there.

Sitharaman’s key message was clear: “Manufacture in India—for India and for the world.” This statement reflects the country’s ambition to enhance its integration into global supply chains and to cultivate partnerships based on innovation and mutual growth.

She invites companies to utilize India’s skilled workforce, competitive manufacturing landscape, expanding infrastructure, and burgeoning domestic market. Key discussions during her trip focused on areas like manufacturing, artificial intelligence, financial services, and advanced technologies, all presenting lucrative prospects for international enterprises.

In her meetings with American executives, Sitharaman sought partnerships in vital sectors. She talked with Monish Patolawala, CFO of ADM, about collaborations in food processing and sustainable supply chains essential for enhancing food security in India. Her discussion with Brandon Tseng, co-founder of Shield AI, revolved around innovations in defense technology, tapping into India’s growing defense manufacturing potential.

Furthermore, she engaged with Luca Zaramella of Mondelēz International to discuss India’s vast consumer market and food-processing capabilities, showcasing the extensive scope of economic cooperation between India and the United States.

During interactions with the Indian community in Chicago, Sitharaman recognized the valuable contributions of Indian-Americans in strengthening U.S.-India relations. She appreciated their roles in various fields such as business and technology, which have helped build people-to-people connections between the two nations and improved India’s global standing.

Sitharaman’s visit was not just about meetings; it was a reaffirmation of the American Midwest’s rising significance in India’s economic journey. Chicago’s status as a hub for finance, manufacturing, and technology positions it as an ideal partner in India’s development efforts.

Ultimately, her visit showcased a vision of a digitally empowered, reform-focused, and globally connected India—ready and eager for partnerships that extend beyond its borders. “We welcome you to invest and innovate in India, not just for its market but for the world,” she declared, framing an optimistic outlook for future collaborations.
