Your Neighborhood Could Impact Your Sleep Quality
Recent studies indicate that where you live can have a significant effect on how well you sleep. Erin Palinski-Wade, a nutritionist from New Jersey, emphasizes that both your home environment and the broader neighborhood can influence your rest.
Noisy conditions, such as living with family members, pets, or in loud areas, can disrupt sleep patterns. “If you’re in a noisy place, you may need to make some changes to improve your sleep,” Palinski-Wade said. She suggests using a white noise machine to help drown out disruptive sounds if you live near busy streets.
Simple changes can greatly enhance your sleep experience. For example, using blackout curtains can minimize light from outside, making it easier to rest.
Neighborhood Design Matters
Beyond individual homes, the design of neighborhoods plays a role in sleep quality. A study led by Professor Daisuke Matsushita from Japan’s Osaka Metropolitan University analyzed over 200,000 Google Street view images with AI to evaluate street features. The research found that residents in neighborhoods perceived as safer slept better and longer.
The study focused on 1,089 residents living in lower-floor apartments in Tokyo. It turned out that those in areas with more trees and greenery, as well as elegant buildings, reported fewer sleep issues and enjoyed longer nights of rest.
On the flip side, well-trafficked areas with more sidewalks seemed to make residents feel less safe, which resulted in shorter sleep durations.
“We hope this research will inspire healthier neighborhood designs,” Matsushita remarked.
Tips for a Better Sleep
To improve sleep quality, experts recommend keeping room temperatures comfortable and closing bedroom doors to minimize outside noise. While the findings suggest environmental factors impact sleep, researchers stress that people don’t necessarily have to move to see improvements.
Palinski-Wade recommends sticking to a consistent sleeping schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same times each day, even on weekends. This regularity can have a positive impact on both the quality and amount of sleep.
Conclusion
Your sleep quality can be influenced by a variety of factors, including your home environment and neighborhood design. Simple changes, such as managing noise levels and maintaining a consistent sleep routine, can greatly enhance your overall restfulness.
