China’s Growing Role in Global Technology and Innovation
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 7 — A Malaysian technology expert recently highlighted China’s advancing position in global industrial innovation. Serm Teck Choon, a prominent technology commentator and former president of the Malaysian Digital Association, noted that China’s progress in science and technology is evident in its industrial growth and market success.
In an interview, Serm shared his views on China’s transition from merely participating in the global tech landscape to becoming a leader. He pointed out that the humanoid robotics industry exemplifies this growth. In 2025, around 13,000 humanoid robots were shipped worldwide, with Chinese companies leading in production.
Serm emphasized that China’s successes reflect its advantages in supply chain efficiency, cost management, and rapid mass production. “China is becoming not just a player but gradually a leader in certain advanced fields,” he stated.
He attributed this rapid development to a cohesive innovation cycle that connects research, development, manufacturing, application, and market feedback. China has built a robust ecosystem spanning consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and intelligent robots, with capabilities that cover everything from key components to fully functional products.
The size of China’s market allows new technologies to be quickly tested and widely implemented. This real-world experience, in turn, influences ongoing research and innovation.
Looking to the future, Serm expressed optimism about enhancing international technological collaboration, especially with Southeast Asian nations in areas like robotics and intelligent manufacturing. He noted that as Southeast Asia undergoes significant industrial modernization, China’s technological expertise could greatly benefit the region.
