Doctors Weigh In: ‘Ferritin Face’ Trend Connects Dark Under-Eye Circles to Iron Deficiency

Understanding Dark Under-Eye Circles: A Sign of Low Iron Levels?

Dark circles under the eyes aren’t just a cosmetic issue; they might signal a lack of iron in the body. This observation has gained attention on social media with the term “ferritin face.” Experts suggest that there’s some truth to this idea, but with important details to consider.

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. According to Dr. Josef Hadeed, a plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, low ferritin can lead to reduced production of hemoglobin, the iron-rich component of red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. When hemoglobin levels drop, the skin may lose its healthy glow, making darker areas under the eyes much more noticeable.

Symptoms of Low Ferritin

Aside from the cosmetic effects, low ferritin can come with several warning signs. Dane Thomas, a Texas-based physician specializing in hematology and oncology, explains that symptoms often worsen as ferritin decreases. These can include:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Headaches and fainting
  • Brittle nails and hair loss
  • Cravings to chew ice

Some individuals may also feel short of breath during activities, have difficulty concentrating, or experience a rapid heartbeat and poor sleep.

Potential Underlying Conditions

Dark circles might indicate more than just low iron stores. They can also point to other health issues, such as chronic bleeding or malabsorption problems. With the rising popularity of bariatric surgery, more patients are developing iron deficiencies due to less effective iron absorption. Certain medications can also contribute to low iron levels.

Dr. Thomas emphasizes that it’s crucial to identify and address the root causes of iron deficiency, which often involves working with other medical specialists.

Pregnancy, heavy menstrual periods, and restrictive diets can additionally contribute to lower iron levels.

Seeking Help and Diagnosis

If you suspect you might have low ferritin, it’s essential to consult with a doctor. Self-treatment is not recommended, as excess iron can be harmful to organs like the liver and heart. A healthcare professional can perform a blood test and may recommend further assessments to uncover any underlying issues.

Treatment Options

Treatment for iron deficiency can vary from oral supplements to, in serious cases, intravenous iron or blood transfusions. While oral iron is common, it may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Doctors often recommend taking iron every other day to minimize side effects.

Incorporating iron-rich foods into your diet can also help. Foods such as beef, fish, leafy greens, and legumes are excellent sources of iron.

Dr. Hadeed reassures that “ferritin face” is reversible. Once iron stores are replenished and hemoglobin levels rise, the skin will gradually regain its healthy appearance, often reducing the dark circles over time. With proper attention and care, it is possible to restore both health and confidence.
