Saudi Strikes Hit Hodeidah Amid Rising Tensions
SANAA/DUBAI: On Friday, Saudi airstrikes targeted Yemen’s Hodeidah governorate, as reported by the Houthi-controlled Al Masirah TV. Eyewitnesses indicated that the port of Hodeidah was among the sites struck.
In a significant development on Monday, the Houthi movement announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea, which could escalate tensions with the United States in the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The Saudi-led coalition has promised a strong response.
Al Masirah reported that the strikes affected facilities linked to the state telecommunications corporation in Hodeidah city and also targeted Kamaran island, located off Yemen’s western coast. Verification of these reports by Reuters was not immediately possible.
Saudi Arabia has been striving to avoid a return to large-scale conflict in Yemen since a truce in 2022 significantly reduced hostilities. The yearlong conflict has resulted in numerous casualties and widespread suffering.
On another front, U.S. military action took place in Iran as President Donald Trump threatened severe retaliation against Tehran and the Houthis for extending hostilities in the Middle East. Following the collapse of a brief truce, Iranian forces reportedly attacked U.S. bases in surrounding Arab nations, signaling a potential escalation.
Controlling northern and western Yemen, the Houthis have asserted their blockade on Saudi Arabia, affecting oil shipments that typically flow through the Red Sea to avoid Iranian choke points in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Bab el-Mandeb strait has become a new focal point in the conflict, leading to concerns about global shipping routes and rising oil prices. Recently, Houthi fighters struck two Saudi oil tankers, prompting several vessels to reroute northwards through the Suez Canal, increasing their travel distances.
As a precaution, shipping insurance costs in the southern Red Sea have surged, with reports indicating that many ships are now taking alternate longer routes to Asia via the Cape of Good Hope. Notably, while some tankers diverted, a significant number still passed through Bab el-Mandeb, carrying crude oil.
Amid these tensions, Iran has threatened U.S. forces, with Trump signaling that further attacks could lead to “major military punishment.” Recent hostilities have resulted in casualties among U.S. service members, raising concerns about safety in the region.
The U.S. embassy in Baghdad has advised American citizens in the Middle East to remain vigilant and cautious, as regional tensions continue to escalate with the potential for more aggressive military actions.
