New Research Highlights Risks of Cannabis Use, Especially Among Youth

Recent studies are raising concerns about the benefits of cannabis, particularly its impact on mental health. Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, points out that modern marijuana, which can contain THC levels between 70% to 90%, is associated with increased rates of mental health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. Notably, cannabis use among Americans aged 12 and older has surged by 180% since the early 2000s, sparking worries about addiction and health complications.

Hollywood actress Sharon Stone recently shared her own experience after quitting marijuana. In an interview, she explained that her decision was motivated by a desire to live drug-free. However, she faced serious health issues and consulted a neurologist due to the intensity of her symptoms. Stone remarked that today’s marijuana is very different from what it used to be, observing, “When I stopped smoking pot, I got pretty sick for a month.”

Experts recognize that while cannabis withdrawal is generally not life-threatening, it can lead to significant discomfort. Dr. Chris Tuell, clinical director of addiction services, confirmed that today’s cannabis products have changed dramatically over the years. THC concentrations have climbed from around 3-5% in the 1980s to as much as 30% in some current products, and concentrates can exceed 90% THC.

Higher THC levels can lead to increased risks of dependence and mental health symptoms. The National Institute on Drug Abuse warns that the potency of modern cannabis may contribute to cannabis use disorder (CUD) and more severe withdrawal symptoms.

Understanding Cannabis Use Disorder

  1. Changes to the Brain: High-potency THC can alter the brain’s reward system, making individuals more prone to Compulsive behavior.

  2. Recognizing Addiction: The American Psychiatric Association outlines several signs that casual use may have developed into dependency—a tendency to use larger amounts, struggling to reduce usage, and neglecting responsibilities due to drug use.

  3. Withdrawal Symptoms: Quitting cannabis, especially after long-term use, can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, mood swings, anxiety, and physical discomfort. While some symptoms might fade in a month, emotional difficulties can persist.

  4. Seeking Medical Guidance: Although cannabis withdrawal usually doesn’t require hospitalization, those with pre-existing health issues or who are also quitting other substances may benefit from medical supervision.

  5. Underlying Mental Health Issues: Mental health conditions often overlap with cannabis use disorder. Addressing these underlying issues through counseling can aid in reducing problematic cannabis use.

Experts advise that anyone considering quitting cannabis gradually lower their intake to ease the transition. Emotional support and professional help can also play a crucial role in managing dependence and its effects.

Stone’s representatives were approached by media outlets for further comments, indicating that her experience is part of a larger conversation about the changing landscape of cannabis use and its potential impacts on health.
