Essentia Health-Virginia Expands Emergency Department to Meet Growing Needs

VIRGINIA — Essentia Health-Virginia is moving forward with plans to expand its emergency department, which will nearly double its capacity. This $13 million project includes the addition of five new exam rooms and a special suite for behavioral health patients. Funding comes from Essentia Health and its regional foundation, along with private donations and a $3.3 million grant from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board.

Sam Stone, the administrator of Essentia Health-Virginia, expressed pride in the project, highlighting the commitment to ensuring residents on the Iron Range have easy access to quality emergency care. The expansion is scheduled for completion in 2027.

Need for Increased Capacity

Dr. Brian Junnila, an emergency room physician, noted that demand for services has surged since the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the need for more space. “We realized that the Virginia ER was too small for the community we serve,” he explained. The expansion will increase the number of emergency department beds from seven to 12, a crucial need as the facility caters to a broad area stretching as far as International Falls.

In addition to standard emergency care, the new behavioral health suite is vital due to the rising number of mental health issues. As society faces greater stress from various factors, having a dedicated space for mental healthcare is becoming increasingly important.

Rural Healthcare Challenges

Despite these improvements, rural healthcare accessibility remains a major issue. Research from the National Institute of Health indicates that more than 130 rural hospitals have closed since 2010, making it harder for residents to receive immediate medical attention. Stone noted that many people may skip necessary care due to long travel times, worsening their health conditions over time.

Telehealth services are being explored as a solution, but not everyone in the rural area has easy access to technology, particularly older residents. “We’re trying to find ways to improve access,” Stone remarked.

A Hub for Specialty Care

Essentia Health-Virginia aims to become a central hub for specialty medical services. Currently, patients often have to travel long distances for specialty care, such as obstetrics, which can be challenging for expecting parents. Efforts are underway to bring specialists into the Virginia clinic for regular consultations in fields like urology and cardiology.

In conclusion, the expansion of Essentia Health-Virginia’s emergency department represents a significant step forward in addressing the healthcare needs of the community, particularly in rural areas where access to medical services is often limited. Stone feels proud of the organization’s commitment to improving rural healthcare, saying, “We’ve identified the problems, and we’re working hard to create solutions.”
