Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: A Battle in Group B

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to be thrilling, especially in Group B, which includes teams like England, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Scotland. Defending champions New Zealand come into the tournament confident after winning their first T20 World Cup title in 2024. They are strong contenders to reach the semi-finals.

As the hosts, England will have home-ground support, and with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt fit and ready, their chances look bright as they aim to secure a major ICC trophy.

The West Indies have the power to take on any team when they are in form, and Sri Lanka will look to their experienced players to push forward in the tournament. Ireland and Scotland are seen as the underdogs but have been improving steadily and are eager to create some surprises.

With England and New Zealand as key contenders and several other competitive teams in the mix, Group B promises to deliver exciting matches and a fierce race for the semi-final spots.

England and New Zealand Lead the Way

England and New Zealand are the top favorites in Group B, thanks to their strong recent performances and talented players.

New Zealand, the reigning champions, had a stellar home season, winning a T20I series against South Africa convincingly. Captain Amelia Kerr showcased her all-round talent, while seasoned players Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates added both stability and strength to the team. Their series ended with a stunning 92-run victory in Christchurch, asserting their status as contenders.

Although they faced a setback against England in a later series, New Zealand’s depth and competitiveness remain strong. This tournament is particularly meaningful for veterans Devine, Bates, and Lea Tahuhu, as they will be retiring from international cricket following the World Cup.

England enters the tournament with momentum after winning a T20I series against India. Alice Capsey shined with a remarkable 82 runs in the deciding match, and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt’s full recovery adds to their strength.

With key players like Kerr, Sciver-Brunt, and Knight in their ranks, England and New Zealand are poised to advance to the semi-finals.

West Indies and Sri Lanka Ready to Compete

Sri Lanka and West Indies have the skill and experience to challenge the top teams for a semi-final spot. Sri Lanka feels confident after a successful Caribbean tour earlier this year, where they won both the ODI and T20 series against the West Indies. Captain Chamari Athapaththu played a vital role in that success, and she aims to continue her good form into 2026.

She has also had a great T20I series against Bangladesh, earning Player of the Series honors. Alongside her, players like Harshitha Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari add valuable support.

For the West Indies, Captain Hayley Matthews stands out as one of the top all-rounders globally. With over 2,700 T20I runs, her contributions can be game-changing. Experienced players like Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor also bring significant value to the team. Having previously won the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2016, they know how to compete on the big stage.

Ireland and Scotland Seek to Make Their Mark

While Ireland and Scotland may be considered underdogs, both teams have the potential to surprise some bigger names in Group B. Ireland recently secured a notable victory against Pakistan, winning their first T20 match by 11 runs in Dublin.

Key players like captain Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter, and all-rounder Orla Prendergast have been essential to their success. Prendergast is gaining recognition as one of the most promising all-rounders in women’s cricket.

Scotland, on the other hand, comes into the World Cup with momentum after winning a T20 tri-series at home. Captain Kathryn Bryce was a standout performer, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. Katherine Fraser and Kirstie Gordon also played crucial roles in their victory.

While neither side is expected to challenge for the title, their talent and confidence can make them formidable opponents and impact the race for the semi-final spots.

Key Players to Watch

  • Amelia Kerr: Since taking over as captain, Kerr has significantly enhanced her game. She has been pivotal for New Zealand, having been named Player of the Series in their successful 2024 campaign. Fans hope she continues this form for another strong showing.

  • Nat Sciver-Brunt: England’s captain, returning from injury, remains a crucial player. Known for her match-winning abilities, her full recovery is vital for England’s hopes.

  • Hayley Matthews: Despite her youth, the West Indies captain brings a decade of experience. Her all-round skills will be crucial for success as they aim for a semi-final spot.

  • Chamari Athapaththu: Featuring in her 10th Women’s T20 World Cup, Athapaththu is a powerful player. Her aggressive style makes her essential to Sri Lanka’s chances.
