India Issues Travel Advisory Following WHO’s Ebola Emergency Declaration
On Sunday, the Indian government issued an important advisory for its citizens in light of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recent declaration of the Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The government highlighted that countries sharing borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, particularly South Sudan, are considered “high risk” for the transmission of the disease. As a result, they are urging travelers to avoid non-essential trips to these regions.
On May 17, the WHO classified the Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency but clarified that it does not qualify as a pandemic emergency. This announcement also pointed out that nations neighboring the Democratic Republic of the Congo are at significant risk.
Countries to Avoid
In its advisory, the Indian government specifically listed the following countries where citizens should refrain from non-essential travel:
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Uganda
- South Sudan
Ebola is a serious viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, known for its high mortality rate. The government noted that, as of now, there is no approved vaccine available to prevent the disease.
