The recent release of the song “Mashooqa” from Cocktail 2 has stirred quite a buzz on social media. The track, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, not only showcases their strong chemistry but has also ignited a debate over possible plagiarism involving composer Pritam. The song, which beautifully captures a scenic road trip and the growing romance between the characters, quickly became a trending topic after its debut.
In “Mashooqa,” Shahid and Kriti are seen in stylish looks as they gradually let down their emotional walls while enjoying breathtaking landscapes. Positioned as a lively and fun romantic number, the song has also drawn attention for its lively visuals. However, the excitement was soon overshadowed by discussions about musical similarities.
Some users on social media pointed out that the main beat and melody of “Mashooqa” resembled the 1993 Italian comedic song “Se So Arrubate A Nonna” by Bibi & Coco. This comparison picked up momentum, particularly because Pritam has faced similar accusations in the past for drawing inspiration from international tracks. Memes, reaction videos, and critical remarks flooded various platforms shortly after the song’s release.
In response to the issue, Pritam took to his Instagram Stories to address the controversy, playfully poking fun at the critics. He noted, “Every release of mine attracts a set of so-called music detectives who have started this new trend of ‘imaginary similarities’. You folks are like my unpaid PR team. Just a friendly reminder: NOT NICE!”
Despite the surrounding controversy, “Mashooqa” continues to garner significant attention, mainly due to the captivating chemistry between Shahid and Kriti and the rich visuals in the presentation. The song has added to the hype for Cocktail 2, one of the year’s most awaited Bollywood releases.
Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026, serving as a spiritual sequel to the 2012 hit Cocktail. The film’s trailer is expected to be released on May 29, 2026.
