Severe Flooding in China Leaves Four Dead and Five Missing

BEIJING: Heavy rains in southwestern China’s Guizhou province have caused severe flooding and landslides, resulting in the deaths of four people and leaving five others unaccounted for, according to state media reports on Tuesday. Thousands of residents have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

In Guiding County, intense rainfall struck from Monday to Tuesday, leading to significant flooding that submerged homes and caused road damage. The state news agency Xinhua reported that emergency teams are actively searching for those who are missing.

Officials have evacuated over a thousand people in the nearby Majiang County, as conditions worsened. Videos from state broadcaster CCTV displayed fast-moving waters inundating residential areas, with fallen trees scattered throughout.

Rescue teams, equipped with life vests and helmets, have been seen navigating through muddy, debris-laden water, helping residents, including an elderly woman who was safely carried to higher ground.

To assist with flood relief efforts, authorities have dispatched thousands of supplies, including drainage equipment, to Guizhou, as reported by Xinhua, citing the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Experts indicate that extreme weather events like these may become more prevalent due to climate change, driven by fossil fuel emissions. While China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, it is also making strides in renewable energy and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
