JioStar Eyes ₹250 Million in Battle Over Bollywood Film Rights with Zee Entertainment: Report

The legal conflict between media companies JioStar and Zee Entertainment Enterprises is heating up. Recently, JioStar has taken legal action against Zee for allegedly broadcasting several Bollywood films without permission. These films are believed to belong to JioStar, which is backed by Reliance and Disney.

On May 4, JioStar filed a petition with the Delhi High Court’s Legal Services Committee, which helps in resolving disputes amicably. A hearing is set for May 25, and Zee has been asked to attend; if they do not, it might be seen as a refusal to engage in mediation.

In a detailed 120-page document, JioStar claims that Zee aired 12 Bollywood films about 20 times without authorization. These films allegedly feature famous actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. JioStar referred to Zee as a “habitual infringer,” arguing that they have repeatedly engaged in unauthorized broadcasts.

Reports suggest that the disagreements over film rights began in February 2025, with both companies exchanging numerous legal notices. JioStar is seeking damages that could exceed Rs 250 million, approximately $2.61 million, although the exact amount is still undecided.

Among the films mentioned in the complaint are classics like the 1975 hit Deewaar starring Amitabh Bachchan. JioStar insists it holds the rights to these films and accuses Zee of airing them without permission.

Zee has responded by claiming that any unauthorized broadcasts were accidental. They also assured they would take more care in the future and denied any responsibility for the damages claimed.

This situation arises as both companies are already entangled in various legal battles. They are also engaged in a separate arbitration case in London over a failed cricket licensing agreement worth $1 billion. Additionally, in April 2026, Zee filed a lawsuit against JioStar for allegedly using its copyrighted music without permission, seeking $3 million in damages.

JioStar was established following the major $8.5 billion merger of Reliance Industries and Disney’s Indian media assets in 2024. Currently, it holds the largest share in India’s media market, while Zee claims a significant market presence as well.

So far, neither JioStar nor Zee Entertainment has provided official statements on this ongoing issue.
