BEIJING: Donald Trump is set to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for his first official visit to China as a US president in nearly ten years. His trip comes as he aims to strengthen trade relations, even amid potential tensions related to Taiwan and Iran.
Leaving Washington on Tuesday, Trump shared that his trip had been delayed due to conflicts tied to his presidency. He expressed his anticipation for a “long talk” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, particularly focused on Iran, which depends on China as a key buyer for its oil, despite US sanctions.
Trump downplayed any significant disagreements regarding Iran, acknowledging that Xi has been “relatively good” in dealing with the situation. “I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll handle it one way or another, peacefully or otherwise,” Trump commented to reporters as he departed the White House.
This visit is crucial as it marks Trump’s return to China since 2017. During his stay, he will engage in important discussions with Xi on Thursday and Friday. His schedule is busy, including a state banquet and a tea reception.
Additionally, Trump mentioned that he plans to address US arms sales to Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. This marks a shift from the US’s previous stance of not consulting Beijing about its support for Taiwan.
