Trump Urges German Chancellor to Focus on Ukraine War
WASHINGTON: Former President Donald Trump has taken aim at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urging him to concentrate on resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine rather than getting involved in Iran-related matters.
This was Trump’s second critique of Merz in a week, following a statement where he mentioned the possibility of repositioning some of the 35,000 U.S. troops currently stationed in Germany, a vital NATO ally.
On his platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “The Chancellor of Germany should dedicate more effort to ending the war with Russia and Ukraine, where he has been totally ineffective! He also needs to address issues in his own country, particularly regarding immigration and energy.”
Additionally, Trump noted that Merz should spend “less time interfering with those working to tackle the Iran nuclear threat, which would make the world a safer place for everyone, including Germany!”
Trump’s remarks come after Merz described Iran as “humiliating” the United States during negotiations to resolve the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict regarding Iran, which has entered its third month.
These comments from Trump followed a call he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the main topic was also the war in Ukraine—an invasion that started in February 2022. Trump has often claimed he could quickly bring an end to that conflict, though tangible progress has yet to be seen.
