Tragic Bus Accident Claims Lives in Jammu and Kashmir

At least 21 people lost their lives when an overcrowded bus skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The tragic incident happened around 8:30 AM local time on Monday, near the village of Kanote in Udhampur district, as reported by the Kashmir News Service.

According to civil administrator Prem Singh, the bus, which was designed to hold 42 passengers, was carrying more than 60 individuals on its journey from Ramnagar to Udhampur. At a sharp turn, the bus collided with an autorickshaw, causing it to veer off course and drop approximately 30 meters (about 100 feet) into the gorge.

Initial reports indicate that 19 passengers died at the scene, while two more succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Around 45 others sustained injuries, with some in critical condition, and they are currently receiving treatment at various medical facilities.

Health officials from the Sub-District Hospital in Ramnagar stated that many victims suffered from severe head injuries and internal bleeding.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. He said, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

India has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the world, with countless lives lost every year. Many accidents are attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads, and aging vehicles.
