WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the U.S. Navy would start a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and would stop any vessels in international waters that have paid tolls to Iran.
Trump made these statements in a post on Truth Social shortly after talks between the U.S. and Iran ended without reaching an agreement. He mentioned that while many issues were discussed and some progress was made, the two sides could not come to terms regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
“Starting now, our Navy, the best in the world, will begin blocking any ships trying to go in or out of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump stated, expressing strong opposition to Iran’s toll collection for passing through the strait.
He added, “I have also directed our Navy to stop any vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays this illegal fee will have safe passage on the seas.”
