KKR Welcomes Back Matheesha Pathirana for Upcoming Match
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a significant boost as they gear up to face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk Stadium. Fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana is set to rejoin the team after obtaining his No-Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket, allowing him to participate in the IPL 2026 season.
Pathirana, who missed the first four matches due to a calf injury he sustained during the T20 World Cup against Australia, could be back in action against his former team. After recovering from his injury, he was waiting for clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket to join KKR.
Bowling Struggles for KKR
KKR has had a rough start to the season, struggling without Pathirana. They have not yet secured a win in their first four matches, suffering three losses and one washout. The three-time champions have been hampered by injuries, with players like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep ruled out before the season even began.
Additionally, KKR let go of Mustafizur Rahman, replacing him with Blessing Muzarabani. Muzarabani has taken four wickets in two games but has struggled with an economy rate of 10.71.
The team’s difficulties were compounded when Varun Chakravarthy missed the last two matches due to a finger injury, and his return date remains unclear. These setbacks have stretched KKR’s bowling ranks thin and led to inconsistent performances.
Pathirana was signed by KKR for Rs. 18 crore after being released by CSK, where he faced challenges in making a significant impact last season. In his IPL career, he has played 32 matches and taken 47 wickets. His standout moment came during CSK’s title-winning run in 2023, where he claimed 19 wickets in just 12 games.
Despite his past successes, injuries and a dip in form have affected his performance in recent seasons. In 2025, he recorded 13 wickets in 12 matches with an average of 32.62 and an economy rate of 10.14. Known for his yorkers and ability to bowl in tight situations, Pathirana’s return is timely for KKR, who have struggled in the final overs of matches this season.
Recently, KKR suffered a narrow loss to Lucknow Super Giants, losing on the last ball, with Mukul Choudhary dominating at the finish. Pathirana’s comeback is expected to shore up KKR’s options during crucial closing overs as they aim for better results in the matches ahead.
