Lebanese Prime Minister Calls for Support in Ending Israeli Attacks
On Thursday, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts toward peace and requested Pakistan’s help in stopping the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and its citizens.
During a phone call, PM Shehbaz condemned Israel’s ongoing actions and shared his sadness over the loss of many lives in the conflict. He reassured Salam of Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace in the region, mentioning the ongoing peace talks between Iran and the United States that Pakistan is facilitating.
Both leaders agreed to stay in touch as the situation develops. In a statement from his office, Salam urged Shehbaz to confirm that Lebanon would be included in the ceasefire related to the Iran conflict. This plea came after recent Israeli airstrikes resulted in over 200 casualties in Lebanon.
Salam acknowledged Pakistan’s role in achieving the truce and requested confirmation that Lebanon would benefit from it to avoid further attacks similar to those experienced on Wednesday.
However, Israel and the U.S. have stated that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, announcing their intent to continue operations against Hezbollah, which has been involved in the regional conflict since March 2.
In response, Iran’s parliamentary speaker emphasized that Lebanon should be considered a vital part of the ceasefire and warned of significant repercussions if the situation continues to escalate, as international appeals grow for Lebanon to be included in the peace agreement.
