Sensofusion Acquires Atol Aviation to Boost Defence Capabilities
Finnish defence technology company Sensofusion has expanded its horizons by acquiring Atol Aviation, a local aircraft manufacturer. This move strengthens Sensofusion’s capacity in aircraft and unmanned aircraft production, enhancing its ability to conduct air-to-ground sensor reconnaissance.
Atol Aviation, based in Halli, Finland, operates out of a former Finnish Air Force base. The company is known for its Atol Aurora amphibious aircraft and the Atol Protector, which is designed primarily for governmental and defense applications.
The acquisition is significant as airborne drone detection can cover much larger areas compared to ground-based systems. With a sensor mounted on an aircraft, the reach is significantly enhanced, allowing for better surveillance in diverse environments free from obstructions like buildings and trees.
Sensofusion has plans to initiate production of new products at the Atol factory while also aiming to expand operations and hire additional staff. More details regarding these new products are set to be revealed in June 2026.
“Our experience in air-to-ground operations positions us well with this acquisition. Many of our Airfence customers have used our systems on various platforms, including helicopters and drones. Achieving signal dominance requires aerial surveillance, as signals can be better detected from the air,” said Tuomas Rasila, founder and CEO of Sensofusion.
Anssi Rekula, founder and CEO of Atol Aviation, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “This partnership marks a significant advancement for Atol Aviation. We see a wonderful synergy in our expertise and execution. Both companies pride themselves on creating high-quality products in Finland, utilizing local engineering talent.”
As this partnership develops, the future looks bright for both Sensofusion and Atol Aviation in the Finnish defence landscape.
